The game of chess is based on a simple principle: you must capture the opponent’s king (put it “in check”). If your opponent cannot respond to this check (moving or capturing pieces does nothing to prevent their defeat), the opponent’s king is said to be “checkmated” and the game ends.

Chess is played with different pieces, each with unique movement characteristics. Each player has 16 pieces: a king and a queen, two bishops, two knights, two rooks, and eight pawns.
