This tarot deck contains 78 cards divided into the four classic suits: Hearts, Diamonds, Spades, and Clubs. Each suit has 10 numbered cards, from Ace to Ten, as well as 4 face cards: Jack, Knight, Queen, and King. The deck is completed by the 21 classic trump cards and the Excuse card. Each trump card illustrates events from everyday life in the 19th century, grouped by theme according to their value.
Tarot is traditionally played with 3 to 5 players. All the cards are dealt to the players, except for a few cards that make up what is known as “the dog.” The player next to the dealer is the first to “speak,” i.e., announce a contract (small, large, guard, guard-without, etc.) or pass. The other players can take turns raising the bet or passing. The player who wins the contract looks at the dog (except for certain contracts), makes a new one, and then announces a King. The person holding the announced King becomes that player's secret ally (until it is revealed). The goal of these two players is to succeed in the contract (i.e., reach the required number of points), while the other players try to prevent them from doing so.
