Historically designed to allow players to discover the game and the rules of Magic the Gathering, pre-built decks have evolved considerably. Magic decks now offer a wide variety of themes and colors, as well as Commander decks with multiple combinations.
As early as 1996, Wizards of the Coast offered turnkey decks for its players. With the aim of introducing players to the game, the first starter decks were very simple. It was with the Mirage edition that the first pre-built decks linked to an edition appeared. These 60-card decks were still quite simple, allowing players to immerse themselves in the world of the edition. Between 1996 and 2011, pre-built decks will evolve, offering a slightly more developed structure, but still primarily aimed at beginners and players wanting to immerse themselves in each extansion's universe.
In 2011, Wizards of the Coast launches its first range of Commander decks, in response to the popularity of this game format. Dedicated to an edition named Commander 2011, these decks were so successful that this type of product was offered for several years in a row, alongside the classic editions. At that time, we could find the classic 60-card decks for each Magic the Gathering edition and the Commander decks specifically developed for a Commander edition.
For some years now, as the Commander format has become even more popular, each Magic edition has been accompanied by Commander decks with the edition's themes. The classic 60-card decks are now offered on a more marginal basis, through products such as Challenger Decks or starter decks.
